This movie provided helpful information on the origins of Israel. Israel's beginnings is unlike any other country in the coarse of history. In most cases nations' roots extend back hundreds of years, or in other situations nations form through the succession of a state into a new state such the case with the United States and England or the Soviet Union and its many newly formed states. Israel, however, is totally different. This state was simply established suddenly, because at the time in Europe, Jewish people were struggling to progress their culture without a true homeland. The British as well as other major powers agreed to grant the Jews their original holy land in the Middle East.
It is understandable that Jews would accept this land. They were being persecuted everywhere they went. Their culture was trully in danger of being destroyed if they could not find a safe and secure place to settle. Jerusalem and it's surrounding lands is where Judaism was created. It is inherently obvious, that Jews would see this land to be rightfully theirs.
I believe a great deal of the fault for the situation we have today falls on the British and their mandate to grant Palestine to the Jews. They new Palestinians were living there, and that Jewish settlers would be seen as invaders. Of course a nation is going to act violently to a group of people that come into their country, steals their land, overuses their resources, oppresses their people, and claims their state as their own. The British just wanted the Jews out of their country and the rest of Europe so they simply relocated them to Palestine without any right to do so. Everybody tends to put the blame of Middle Eastern violence on Palestinian Arabs and Jewish Israelis, but these two groups are just acting naturally. It is the British who are at true fault for once again extending their authority beyond its true limits and claiming control over land that is not theirs.
I found “Israel Birth of a Nation” to be quite interesting. Not may people realize how Israel came to exist and that England played a major role in its existence. The Jews did deserve land of their own considering they do have their own culture and many became displaced with the onset of the Holocaust. They faced much persecution throughout the years and it seemed legitimate for them to move onto Palestinian land and make it their own.
It was not right for Palestinians to be forced out of their land and better methods should have been decided. Yet that it what happened and is the cause for the conflict at the present time. As the Palestinians see it, the Jews went into to Israel and were given land that they owned. This is definitely a cause for tension.
Each group deserves the right to their own land where they can preserve their customs and cultures. It just so happens that both groups want the same land. Before the Jews were given Israel, they were a group without a place to live and now it is the same for the Palestinians.
Israel was a land for Jews to be free from persecution. Creating Israel was elevating homeless Jews in Europe, America and other parts of the world and creating a homeland to protect and secure their existence with the help of those who wanted Jews out of their lands, specifically the Europeans who helped and lobbied in the United Nation and convinced other countries that the only way to take Jews out of Europe was by securing a land for them. Israel was established at the end of the Second World War. In November 1947, the United Nations created two states, one Jewish, one Arab. The partition of Palestine between the Arabs and the Jews brought conflict. In December, 1947 Arab snipers attacked a civilian bus, killing 5 Jews. Arabs then stormed a Jewish commercial center, burning it to the ground. Arab and Jewish communities were in a state of war. The leader of Palestine Jews would not surrender Jerusalem. He also committed troops to defend all other Jewish communities.
Jewish convoys had to travel through Arab communities. These convoys were harrassed and attacked. Jews living in the old city, Jerusalem, were victims of an Arab blockade that lasted five months before they were forced to surrender on May 29, 1948. When Arabs killed Jews they mutilated the bodies. Northern cities of Israel were mixed communities of Jews and Arabs. In the month of February, in Jerusalem an explosion killed 47 Jews and wounded 130. In March another explosion killed 12 Jews. The Arab villages that surrounded Jerusalem continued aggression towards Jews. Many Jews were holocaust survivors, they sought a safer life.
In April 1948 known as the "Cruel" month, there was fighting inside Jerusalem to control individual neighborhoods. There were victories and loses. The Arab League declared its refusal to recognize the UN resolution and the two-state solution, favoring a one-state solution run by an Arab majority, and including both the Jewish and Arab territories. This led to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War from which Israel emerged victorious over the Arabs, including Egypt. The Arabs suffered a major loss when their best commander was killed. The following days Jewish forces attacked an Arab village and killed many women and children. A Jewish convoy of Doctors, nurses, patients and medical supplies was attack by Arab gunmen. Seventy-seven Jews were killed. No one was immune to the violence.
Not an easy battle, deaths continue, In six days, Israel conquered the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Golan Heights, which became collectively known as the Occupied Territories. The Six Day War occurred due to the continuing Arab world hostility to the State of Israel, which had begun with the War of Independence in 1948 taking over a Palestinian Arabs homeland. The Arab countries continually refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the Jewish state. By 1967 Israel military has defeated the Arab states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Until today the territories Israel gained did not stop future fighting.
“Israel Birth of a Nation” provides the audience with an abundant amount of useful information regarding the formation of Israel. One of the most fascinating aspect of the movie was about how uniquely Israel was created. Most countries are created through civil wars and other various political movements, but Israel on its own is a totally different case. The allies (Briton in particular) after World War II decided the Jews needed a home state so they could defend themselves and protect their families from being persecuted by cantankerous campaigns of genocide and slavery (Nazis, Egyptians). Briton had control over Jerusalem and agreed to give the Jews the land. Many felt the Allies did this purely out of good will but many believe the establishment of Israel was a way to take care of Europe’s Jewry “problem.” Israel acted as a “vacuum” for the Jews of anti-Semitic Europe, which ultimately led to the establishment of modern day Israel.
It seems the establishment of “Jewish” state does not exactly fit perfectly with the Torah. The Torah specifically says that there will not be a Jewish state until the messiah returns to the holy land. To my knowledge the messiah has not returned to the holy land unless the Jews consider Tzipi Livni the messiah, but nonetheless, I feel the Jews do deserve their own state so they can protect themselves from being subjected to genocide again. The only problem is the land they moved into originally use to be occupied by the Palestinians. These Palestinians were forced out of their homes and now live in conditions which violate article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. It seems that the creation of Israel transferred the Nazi’s campaign of genocide from Europe to Palestine. In this case the Palestinians are the ones being systematically exterminated by a military campaign hosted by the IDF. It seems this may have given birth to the tension between the two parties.
Personally I feel both parties deserve their own land so they can protect their culture and ensure their people can live without the fear of unjust persecution. Hopefully one day Peace can be attained between the two parties.
